Republic Day 2026: PM Modi's Colourful Turban Adds A Personal Touch To Parade (X)
New Delhi: For the 77th Republic Day celebrations, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday arrived at Kartavya Path wearing a beautiful bright and multi-coloured Rajasthani turban also known as safa or pagdi, a signature element that has become a highlight of the annual celebrations alongside the parade.
PM Modi's region-inspired turban was paired with a blue kurta and a Nehru jacket, which stood out against the formal backdrop of the parade.
Like every year, the Prime Minister’s choice of colourful headgear, which adds a strong cultural note to the national event, became one of the first talking points, even before the marching ceremony and tableaux came in.
The turban featured a mix of vibrant colours arranged in a traditional Rajasthani print. The red-tie dye turban was bold but not flashy with gold motifs. PM Modi's look reflected folk traditions from western India, with patterns commonly seen during festivals and public ceremonies.

The turban is a mix of colours, featuring red, green, purple, yellow, and orange hues and is decorated with golden motifs that resemble Rajasthani print..
PM Modi paired the headgear with a navy blue-and-white kurta-pyjama and a light blue half jacket.

PM Modi always uses his Republic Day attire to send subtle cultural signals. Every year, he chooses turban of different colours, patterns and regional styles, often as nods to India's diverse textile traditions.
After taking office in 2014, PM Modi made his Republic Day turban a yearly custom. From saffron bandhej styles to silk turbans inspired by different regions, each year’s look has been distinct.
